GET THE HEALTHY EATING HABIT

How to drop the junk and eat healthily in 7 days

Day 1: What are the healthy foods?

What are the healthiest foods to eat? You want to make choices that are good for your health, and you're keen to give your family food that will do them good, but it's so hard to know what foods to choose. The items you see on the supermarket shelf or chiller may look enticing, but you know that packaging can conceal a multitude of sins.

So, what foods should you choose? Its simple. Follow this healthy food list:

  • Eat fresh foods, as close to their natural state as you can. So, buy fresh vegetables, ideally ones that have been grown close to your home, and not shipped half way round the world before they reach you. Wash, peel and chop them yourself.
  • Buy organic products often but use discretion, and opt for locally produced foods, organic or not, over imports.
  • Cut down on red meat, increase poultry, fish, pulses and vegetable-based dishes.
  • Cook from scratch often, and drop the number of ready-meals you buy.
  • Learn about food labels, avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils and any goods with a long list of additives.
  • Seek out healthier types of cakes, cookies and biscuits. Better still, do some baking, using simple recipes and pure ingredients like organic butter and sugar, and wholewheat flour. These wholesome foods can help satisfy your desire for sweet things.
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables at every meal. Slice on to cereals, puree into sauces, eat as crudits before a meal get inventive!
  • Use more pulses beans, chickpeas, more wholegrains and choose brown rice, wholewheat pasta, wholemeal bread.
  • Learn about the superfoods and make sure you eat plenty of them.
  • Dont totally give up the foods you love, but cut back on them, and substitute healthier items wherever you can.

Start using the healthy food list, and making healthy food choices, and soon youll be eating healthily without even trying.
