Peligoni Organic Olive Oil

A Healthy Eating Made Easy Food Buy

Its the 3000 years know-how that counts with this delicious oil from the Greek island of Zakynthos, where cultivation and production methods have hardly changed since Odysseus conquered the island.

Peligoni Organic Olive Oil is unique to Zakynthos, a Greek island smothered in shady olive groves, where the leaves of 1000-year-old olive trees flutter silver in the warm breeze. The locals swear that eating their olive oil leads to a long, healthy life.

Peligoni Organic Olive Oil is certified organic, and is produced by a co-operative of 15 organic farmers. Hand-picked Koroniki olives are pressed with traditional granite millstones and hydraulic presses, then the oil is left to separate naturally, and filtered. This cold pressing gives the best, rarest oil, wonderfully thick and with every precious nutrient and antioxidant intact.

The oil beat stiff competition to get a mention in Judy Ridgways book, Best Olive Oil Buys Round the World: "The aromasare quite light and mainly herbal in tone. The flavours are full ofspicy fruit and a peppery kick."

Judy Hamnett decided to import this delicious organic olive oil, because she wanted to bring a taste of it to the UK, where it was unavailable. Judy says, "I was blown away by the beauty of Zakynthos. Id like to sell a range of organic goods from the island eventually. Everyone who tastes this oil loves it, and it has all the health benefits of being produced organically as well."

How to use Peligoni Organic Olive Oil
To enjoy the full, well-rounded flavour at its best, pour the oil into a small bowl and use for dipping bread before a meal. Its also excellent for dressing salads, especially Greek salads of cucumber, tomatoes and olives. Good with vegetables, drizzled over feta cheese, used as a sauce for pasta or for roasting or grilling vegetables, chicken, meat or fish.

Our tasters say...
The oil arrived the day after ordering, carefully packaged. We particularly liked the bottle. The slender flask-shape is very pleasing to both eye and hand. First we tried the oil on its own, as a dip for warm ciabatta bread. We enjoyed its peppery kick and strong fruity aroma its a great oil to enjoy in this simple way.

It was best of all in a very simple oil and vinegar dressing which we used on a salad of mixed leaves and herbs. Thats when it really came into its own, and the excellence of the flavour shone through, as something far superior to the everyday olive oil which we all have on the shelf.

Our verdict? Peligoni Organic Olive Oil would make a lovely gift for your favourite foodie, because its so beautifully presented as well as tasting great. And its also a good oil to have in the kitchen for those dishes where you want an oil with extra fruity flavour.
