Parents overestimate how much exercise their kids are getting
by Elizabeth
(Healthy Eating Made Easy)
8 December 2009 Only one child in 10 gets sufficient exercise - yet nearly three-quarters of parents are convinced that their kids are active enough for good health, says The Telegraph.
Part of the problem surely must be that the parents are no more active than the children. If mum and dad slump down on the sofa all evening, and don't make any effort to include exercise in their daily lives, what hope is there for the kids?
One child in three overweight or obese in the UK, and these kids will grow up into unhealthy adults with a shortened life expectancy.
The answer? Learn about eating healthy and exercise.

Eating healthy to lose weight
by Elizabeth Healthy Eating Made Easy
30 Dec 2009 - Isn't odd how, over the last few days, we've all conveniently forgotten about eating healthy - and losing weight.
According to the guy on Classic FM this morning, yesterday was the day of maximum guilt for all the over-indulgence that's gone on over the holidays - and now it's time to get back on track.
With that in mind I have braved the icy drizzle and gone to the greengrocer for leeks and potatoes for a healthy soup recipe, and more veggies to make a vegetarian curry tonight.

What is a healthy instant drink for kids?
My son is 2 year and 10 month old. He is not taking solid foods properly. Can you please suggest me a healthy drink in Tamilnadu. He goes go play school and do not eat from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. kindly suggest. He is telling about back pain. But all the investigations are normal.
Answer If you are concerned because your son is not taking solid food properly, you need to consult your doctor. A child of this age should be eating solid food without problem, so he needs checking out. He should also eat several times between 7.30 and 4.30 - this is a very long time for a young child to go without nourishment. Instant drinks are generally full of sugar and are not good drinks for him to have. Milk is very nutritious and he can also have juice once a day.

Pancake Day Recipe
Hurray, it's time for my favourite Pancake Day Recipe - because it's Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, tomorrow.
Remember to buy eggs, flour and milk (it's fine to use skimmed milk, or even half-and-half milk and water) today, ready for the great flipping pancake time tomorrow.
Keep it simple with a squeeze of lemon and dusting of caster sugar, or serve your pancakes with fruit - apples, bananas or blueberries are good.

Is it true you can mistake hunger for thirst?
by Natalie
(UK)
I think I have a fairly healthy diet - chicken, meat, fruit, vegetables and the odd chocolate bar. I think eating in moderation is totally OK. But I always seem to get hunger pangs. I've heard this can be mistaken for thirst - Is this true?
Answer: Yes, that is correct. Make sure you stay well-hydrated, and drink around 2 litres of water day. The hunger pangs you experience may also be affected by how regularly you eat. Having several smaller meals and snacks spread through the day, rather than one big meal in the evening, helps to keep your blood sugar stable, and keep hunger pangs at bay.

Healthy soup recipe - leek and potato soup recipe
by Elizabeth Healthy Eating Made Easy
I turn to my list of healthy soup recipes all the time, and love adding new variations. Soup is a great healthy choice, and when you've been eating a lot of foods that are richer than usual, it's great to settle down to a simple bowlful of goodness.
I just made a lovely leek and potato soup from start to serving in 25 minutes. Here's how:
Trim, wash and shred 3 leeks. Scrub one large potato and dice, leaving the peel on. Place in a large pan and cover with boiling vegetable stock - about 3-4 cups. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 15 minutes, until the potato is softened.
Process or blend, and if the puree is too thick, thin it down with more stock or skimmed milk. Season with pepper (you won't need salt if you've used stock powder or a cube, because there's enough salt in those already), sprinkle over some chopped parsley if you have it, and serve.

Publish the whole site as a book?
Just found your website while Googling "Food Preservatives" and I must say it is one of the best health websites I have found on this subject. And I ended up reading many more articles than I came here.
You lay out the facts in a simple and clear manner, and I will be using this website as a reference point to discourage people from eating too much junk and fast food.
By the way, I have a suggestion which could help you make some money from this website: you should look into organizing all the articles in this website into a book and sell it. You could look at lulu.com for publishing it. I sure would buy it.
Thank you.
Answer Thanks, what a great idea! I'll bear it in mind - Healthy Eating - the Book - that would be wonderful. Elizabeth Healthy Eating Made Easy

A healthy diet helps prevent depression
by Elizabeth
(Healthy Eating Made Easy)
Have you got the winter blues?
If dark mornings are dragging you down, think about what you eat. Your diet affects the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain, those chemicals that have a direct impact on your mood. A diet rich in fresh fruit and veg increases the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin you produce - and that in turn makes you feel happier and less likely to succumb to depression.
Junk foods, high in fats and sugars, reduce the levels of serotonin and make you more likely to feel downcast and sluggish.
Just another reason to get the healthy eating habit, all year round.

Can I keep fit without a lot of exercise??
hi i'm k......... i've just moved into Darwin and i don't have the chance to exercise a lot. My dad says that i'll begin to exercise in a little while. What can i do to keep fit without a lot of exercise????
Answer Hi K...it's hard to keep really fit without exercising. The most important thing is to have a healthy diet and stay away from junk food, that will keep your body healthy. But to be really fit you do need to exercise every day. Make sure you walk whenever you can, try taking a cycle ride, jogging round the park, dancing round your room - any little bits of exercise you can fit into your day will be great.

Want to buy British-grown mange-tout?
by Elizabeth, Healthy Eating Made Easy
Great news, this summer you can shun those packs of shrivelled veggies that have been freighted such a long way, and buy British-grown mange-tout and Marks & Spencer.
As befits a seasonal vegetable, they'll be available for just a few weeks until the end of August. The British mange-tout have been grown in Chipping Camden in the beautiful Cotswolds, by the Haines family.
How much more appetising, than a long-distance vegetable. Other supermarkets, please follow suit.
For ideas on how to use your fresh and tasty mange-tout see our Snow Pea Recipes.

How to gain weight healthily?
by J.
(Cape Town, South Africa)
I need to gain weight as fast as possible, currently 90kg(2 metres), but still look lanky, need to get lean muscle to gym effectively.
Answer It takes time and patience to gain weight. A good approach is to have several smaller, balance meals a day - this will help you to take in more calories. Include healthy proteins at each meal, like oily fish - tuna, herring, sardines - lean meat or poultry, eggs, nuts and seeds and pulses.
You should also eat plenty of healthy carbohydrates, including fresh fruit and vegetables, and whole grain cereals.
Protein drinks between meals could also help with weight gain. Do resistance exercises regularly to help build muscle.

Simple Healthy Supper Idea
by Elizabeth
(Healthy Eating Made Easy)
A friend just emailed me forlornly...'any healthy eating ideas for the weekend...I can't think what to cook'.
My reply?
'Cook up some ratatouille, just sliced onions, courgettes (zucchini) and lots of red and yellow peppers, I roast them first for better flavour, but you don't have to...and canned tomatoes. Garlic, a few herbs. Keeps well, and you can have with pasta, rice, cous cous, by itself, with cheese on top, or a poached egg - or with a bit of chicken or fish if you want something more substantial...'

Which cereals are made without wheat, using instead refined white flour?
I have been diagnosed with cancer and can only eat cereals made with refined white flour. Any suggestions? Thanks, Melodie
Answer: Refined white flour is made from wheat, so if you've been advised against eating any wheat products you should look for cereals which are based on oats or rice.
You'll find more information here: breakfast cereals.

Life of Fresh Refrigerated Gooseberries
by Betsy
(Missouri)
Does anyone know how long fresh gooseberries will be good stored in the refrigerator? I bought some about 3 weeks ago to make pie and still haven't used them. They look fin and they have been in the fridge this whole time.
Thanks.
Answer Hi Betsy - it's fine to use your gooseberries if they still look fresh - you would know if they were unfit for use because they would shrivel and start to turn rotten. Enjoy your pie. Elizabeth Healthy Eating Made Easy

Healthy holiday eating - mind those serving sizes!
by Elizabeth
(Healthy Eating Made Easy)
15 December 2009 We all know we'll be eating unhealthy foods over the days to come - and it's hard to avoid the seasonal round of meals out, drinks gatherings and mince-pie occasions.
Your best damage-limitation strategy is to beware, not so much of what you eat, but of how much you eat. The piled plate is not your friend. Enjoy the seasonal goodies, but in moderation...you won't feel so stuffed, and your digestive system and waistline will love you for not indulging in calorie-overload.
