Nope, I want to be a work at home mum, and have the freedom to down tools if one of them is ill, or in a concert or sports match, or when it’s the school holidays. But I still want to work at something that’s satisfying and enjoyable, and that earns money. Something had to change...Ever since the children were tiny, I’ve worked at home as a freelance writer and editor. That's what I did before I had kids.Although I have some flexibility, in that I can work the hours I choose (as long as I get the job done!), the downside is that I’m at the beck and call of employers. Sometimes I don’t have work for weeks at a time, then whaddya know, along come three huge jobs all at once – usually a week before term ends. It’s feast or famine. So a while ago, I decided to look for something I could do at home, that was totally under MY control. That was interesting, creative and enjoyable, and that would earn me money. I didn't need to earn a fortune straight away. Even now I’m still doing the ‘day job’. But in the long term I wanted work that could build, and provide an income that would grow. Not much to ask! The hunt was on...I searched the Internet. I saw scams by the dozen – no, by the hundred, and came dangerously close to being taken for a ride a few times. And then, I came across the Site Build It! site. And the more I read, the more I realised that this could be what I was looking for. Eventually, around Christmas time, when all the family but me were ill in bed (typical xmas fun!), I went on the Internet - and bought Site Build It!. Merry Christmas to me! Slow, steady progressIn the months that followed, I gradually set to work on my site - this site.When I started, I knew virtually nothing about site building, but SBI has the tools I needed to make it simple enough for a total novice, plus there's lots of fantastic support on offer, so I never felt I was struggling on my own. Don't just listen to me, though - listen to what this work at home mum has to say, about how she builds her website with SBI... These days my site's getting more visitors all the time, and my income from it is steadily increasing. Some weeks I do a lot of work on my site, other weeks very little. It all depends what else is happening in my life, and it doesn’t matter. This time, I’M in control. The great thing is that I can work on my site when I have a bit of time, but if the family need me, that's fine. I can stop work and pick it up again when it suits me. That flexibility is best thing of all - because we wahms have a lot going on in our lives. Over the years since I had my two kids, now 11 and 15, I've never been tempted to get back into mainstream employment. It used to be fine before I was a mum, but now I don’t want to be tied to office hours, without the flexibility to be there when my kids are around.
