Student cooking online – the new way forward

Student cooking is a challenge for many young people starting out at university, but StudentCooking.tv is out to change that.

Two friends who met at university – one a keen chef, the other struggling to make anything more than a ready meal – decided to create a website that would teach students how to cook using videos.

The site has a relaxed, laid-back feel and is packed full of content – there are lots of recipes ranging from essentials like how to make a white sauce, easy meals such as tuna pasta bake and more complex dishes, including roast chicken with all the trimmings.

The recipes are very easy to follow as they’re broken down into simple steps and supported with photos. It also has videos of students demonstrating recipes which are easy to follow and that allow you to see how the meal is put together.

Other videos include ‘cook offs’ between students from different universities, videos on recycling and cooking events held at different universities; Loughborough has even made a video on shopping for food in their city centre.

You can also create your own personal food diary – the website lets you add recipes you use from the site, then they match your nutrient intake against guided daily amounts. This would be really useful if you wanted to do a weekly meal plan or if you’re controlling your calorie intake – if you’re into sports it’s perfect for a healthy eating diet plan.

Lots of universities have joined up with the website – you can do a search for your university to find out what videos they have uploaded and what’s going on.

Student verdict? A useful and easy to use website, and definitely a good way to help improve your student cooking.
