ORGANIC BABY FOOD RECIPES: FRUIT AND
VEGETABLE PUREES
Packed with vitamins, these simple fruit and vegetable purees are
perfect for giving small babies their first tastes of solids.
You can add baby rice to any of these purees, if your baby likes it,
for a thicker food. Avoid wheat-based products, including pasta,
until your baby is at least six months old.
Purees suitable for freezing
Basic method. Peel, core or pip, chop the fruit or vegetable.
Cook gently for 5 mins with 3 tbsp water until soft, then blend or
sieve. Leave to cool before feeding.
Apple. Use 1 sweet eating apple.
Carrot. 1-2 medium carrots.
Potato. Boil potatoes, or scoop out the flesh of a baked potato
and add cooled, boiled water.
Butternut. Boil, or oven bake before pureeing.
Vegetable mixes. Combine potato with parsnip, carrot, swede or
broccoli.
Dried fruits. Cover dried prunes, apricots or peaches with water
and simmer gently until very tender. Blend or sieve.
Purees unsuitable for freezing
Banana. Most babies love banana, and all you need to do to
prepare it, is mash it thoroughly with a fork. Make the puree at meal
time, because it discolours very quickly.
Avocado. Another one that quickly turns brown unless freshly
made.
Melon. Very refreshing, blended or sieved.
Mango. You'll need a blender for this one, as the fruit is too
fibrous to pass through a sieve.
Pear. Ripe ones are easy to mash. If they're harder, cook as for
apple puree.
ORGANIC BABY FOOD RECIPES: MEAT AND
POULTRY
Introduce meat and other protein foods once your baby is around 8 months
old.
Make simple casseroles for your baby. Cook a chopped onion until softened. Add
chopped organic chicken breast or lamb fillet, canned tomatoes, other vegetables.
Simmer gently until tender, blend. Thin with water if necessary.
Add a little chopped cooked poultry or meat to any of the vegetables listed above
before you blend.
Mix mashed potato with organic mince cooked with canned tomatoes, or water,
tomato puree and herbs. Blend if necessary, depending on your baby's age. Don't
use stock cubes to make cooking liquid for meat, as they are too salty.
Once your baby gets to 9 months-plus, you can start serving food that you give to the rest of the family, as long as it's mashed or blended to the right consistency. Many of the recipes in
