Mother's Day Breakfast

Your Mum will love a treat on her special day, so prepare a special Mother’s Day breakfast in bed.

If you’re wondering when is Mother’s Day 2010, the answer is 14 March in the UK, while Mothering Sunday in the USA falls on 9 May. Why not plan a treat to get your mum’s day off to a happy start?

Having a lie-in is a real luxury for most mums, and if you bring her a delicious and pretty breakfast in bed, she’ll be delighted. Here are some ideas for that special Mother’s Day breakfast.

  • If you want to make a hot dish, like grilled mushrooms, or poached eggs, serve some juice and cereal first, and make the hot food freshly when she’s ready to eat it so that it doesn’t cool down.
  • Fresh fruit makes a lovely and healthy Mother's Day breakfast. Try cubes of ripe mango, a little bowl of blueberries, or some sliced strawberries. Strawberries aren’t properly in season in March, but more and more growers are producing them all year round under glass. Buy local ones if you can.
  • If you have a juicer, you could make a jug of this zesty drink by blitzing 4 apples, 2 large oranges and 2 large carrots, with a small piece of fresh ginger and a generous squeeze of lime. No machine? Use an ordinary hand-juicer to extract the juice from 2 blood oranges and half a pink grapefruit. Mix well and serve chilled.
  • If your mum would enjoy a glass of fizz as part of her Mother's Day breakfast, you could offer her a glass of Buck's Fizz, a beautiful celebratory drink. To make it, mix well-chilled champagne, cava or sparkling wine in equal parts with fresh orange juice.
  • Is your mum a fan of porridge? The healthiest way to make porridge is with water or low fat milk, but just this once you could use full-cream milk to make it super-creamy. To make it very special, stir through some Greek yogurt, or top with a drizzle of organic cream and a sprinkling of brown sugar.
  • If your mum would rather have muesli for her Mother’s Day breakfast, buy one that’s packed with fruit and nuts. You can add extra fresh fruit as a topping.
  • To finish, check out these Healthy Cake Recipes for a sweet treat. Get cooking from our recipes, and you can serve a healthy home-made muffin, a slice of carrot cake, or a portion of our healthy chocolate cake - for an extra treat you could warm the cake and even top it with a drizzle of cream. Pure indulgence – just what mums need for a Mother’s Day breakfast.
