Lowering Salt and Fat Intake could Save Lives, says NICE
by Elizabeth, Healthy Eating Made Easy
It's official - reducing salt and fat intake could cut the number of heart attacks and other killer diseases and save up to 40,000 lives a year in the UK, say the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
The report recommends that manufacturers cut the amount of salt and saturated fat in processed foods, and that the deadly trans fats are banned completely.
Another great suggestion is that low fat and low salt foods be sold more cheaply than the unhealthier foods, to give people a financial incentive to eat more healthily.
But in the end, whether manufacturers comply or not - and needless to say, they are whingeing - it's up to us as consumers to regulate our own diets.
Create your own heart healthy diet by eating fresh, simply prepared foods as often as possible and cutting out the junk. You could be saving your own life.
