How to have a healthy diet that's good for the planet

13 December 2009 It's time for consumers to cut down on meat and dairy, eat fewer processed foods and stop wasting so much food - so says the UK Sustainable Development Commission.

Making these changes would be great for the nation's health, lowering rates of cardiovascular disease and some cancers as well as helping to reduce obesity. The planet would benefit as well, by a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

How to do it? Make more use of seasonal fruit and vegetables, and cut right back on the junk. Cook simple meals from scratch and shop wisely to reduce waste.

Not so...says the Food and Drink Federation

A follow-up story from the Food and Drink Federation (15 Dec 09) points out that there are no clearcut answers to the healthy diet/low environmental impact equation. For example, veg grown in a UK greenhouse can have a high carbon footprint...just because vegetables are local doesn't meant they're environmentally friendly.

The questions raised by this whole debate are many and complex. Food and drink companies have reduced emissions by 19% since 1990...but there is still a long, long way to go.
