How much weight do you gain in winter?

by Healthy Eating Made Easy
(UK)

How much weight do you gain over the colder months of the year? A story in the UK Guardian (24/11/09) reports that studies in the US have shown that the average winter weight gain is just one pound (0.5 kg).

So far, so slender - but do you shed that surplus pound come the spring? Most people don't...and year on year, find their weight creeping ever upwards.

The answer - carry on with the exercise, adapting it to the chillier weather with suitable clothing, or going for indoor rather than outdoor activities. And stock up your freezer with veggie soups and casseroles, rather than junk food snacks.

My winter weight gain
by: CK

Hi,

My winter weight gain is always seven to ten pounds - and it always starts to go on in December, before Christmas, and piles up when the weather's cold up to around March or April, by which time I am getting in a panic that I've got to lose it all before spring arrives.

It's the same old story every year, and I can never seem to escape this situation!

My problem is that I hate the cold weather, never feel warm in the house or in bed, and so constantly make hot drinks like coffee and tea (with sugar and milk) or hot chocolate, and of course, then I feel like having a snack or two with them.

Also when the weather is cold, I don't want to go out for a walk. I live by the sea, so it's always wet and windy. I'm 48 years old and frightened that middle age spread is going to defeat me one of these winters. So I'm trying to be strong this year :)

This really becomes a problem if, come the spring, you don't manage to shed the weight you've put on. Try switching to healthier snacks. You could experiment with exercise videos or online programs which can give you a chance to workout without leaving home.

You could also be gaining more easily because you've hit the menopause. Have a look at our sister site, Beat Menopause Weight Gain for more help with this.

I'm sure it's more than 1lb...
by: Sadie

...my waistband in January tells me that it's surely more than one little pound that goes on over the eating-fest. I cut right back after the new year and have soup/salad for lunch and no alcohol until Valentine's.
