Keep bananas fresh by: Elizabeth, Healthy Eating Made Easy
It's hard to stop bananas turning black in a child's lunchbox because bananas are a delicate fruit and bruise easily.
A black skin means that the banana is very ripe, and the fruit inside will be deliciously sweet, but a banana in this condition is probably best enjoyed at home. You can stop bananas from ripening to quickly by keeping them in the fridge - but oddly, this makes the skin turn black.
It's also best to store bananas separately from other fruit, as putting them in the fruit bowl alongside apples and pears makes the skins turn black faster.
But back to your grandson's lunch box. I'm a long-time fan of the Banana Guard, an inexpensive banana-shaped plastic box, which is perfect for protecting bananas on the journey to school or picnic. They are delivered worldwide, so take a look.
