29 December 2005Leftover turkey recipes
Guess what we're having for lunch - yes, lovely turkey soup, again. It looks like everyone out there is busy making the most of their Christmas turkey leftovers, as I've had droves of visitors to my leftover turkey recipes page. We've tried them all, succulent turkey sandwiches, warming turkey soups, refreshing turkey salads, and tonight we'll be getting stuck into turkey curry. We had a lovely, locally reared free-range turkey which was beautifully succulent and provided masses of meat. All of which means that I haven't had to think too hard about food this week, just carve a bit more off the bird - and that's how it ought to be at this time of year.

19 December 2005Lovely seasonal fruit and vegetables
Today, I bought celery which looked like celery ought to look. At the local shop they ask if you want your celery ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’. ‘Dirty’ celery is wonderful, freshly dug and straight from the fertile soil of the Lincolnshire fenlands. I lugged it home, a big, bulging white root lightly caked in rich, crumbly, black soil, tapering to pale green ends with frondy green leaves. The flavour is sweet and fresh, the texture cold and crisp. The whole thing, aeons away from the anaemic, leafless green stuff in a plastic bag. Why buy anything other than seasonal fruit and vegetables? I’ll be going back for more, to enjoy with our Christmas Stilton cheese.

15 December 2005Healthy holiday eating tips
Ah, and I was so full of good blogging intentions at the start of the month. I really like to write every couple of days, but events – known as present-shopping-and-the-rest – have overtaken me, and no doubt virtually every other work at home mum in the land. But now, I’ve reached that happy place, where all the pressies are bought, and I can get back to my lovely site!
Writing about healthy eating is a bit tricky at this time of year, when there’s so much that’s decidedly unhealthy on offer. I don’t believe in total denial – celebratory, special-occasion food is wonderful, to be shared and enjoyed. But… not too much. And with some healthier items alongside. That’s all there is to it, I promise. Take a look at my healthy holiday eating tips and see how simple it is too enjoy the feasting, and still keep healthy eating in mind.

6 December 2005Easy rice pudding recipes
Sometimes, the easiest things are the nicest. I had some extra milk. And a pack of short grain rice. Making a rice pudding took no time at all, and it stayed half the afternoon in the oven, filling the kitchen with a sweet, nutmeg aroma. Rice pudding, a lovely dish, and what’s more there’s plenty left for tomorrow.

5 December 2005Easy healthy recipes
Yesterday I counted up the number of recipes on the site and, wow, there are now more than 80. They’d been getting a bit disorganised, so I set to and revamped the Easy Healthy Recipe Index, to make everything easier to find. Mm, what good meals we’ve been having since I started the site – there’s very little in that index that I haven’t cooked, and most of them I’ve tried and tweaked several times. Now, I’m going to go flat out to make it up to 100.

1 December 2005Healthy soup recipe
It was so cold in my room first thing yesterday morning, that I started work wearing fingerless gloves, a thick jumper zipped up to the nose, 2 pairs of socks and a blanket over my knees, then gradually flung off the layers as I warmed up. By lunch time I was feeling in need of something warming. I had a bit of Jerusalem artichoke soup left, so I added a bit of stock, a chopped potato and a handful of spinach leaves and let it simmer until the potato was tender, then blended. Mm, nice, but a bit bland. A dash of hot chilli sauce, and a handful of chopped coriander leaves later and, ooh yes, a very delicious, highly warming homemade soup.
