Do potatoes count as a portion of vegetables?

by Kate

Hello. Do potatoes count as a portion of vegetables?

On your page about five a day you say: "Potatoes never count towards your daily vegetable servings, in any form"

Why do you think so? I understand if it's in the form of chips or something like that, but I eat a locavore diet and right now the only vegetables I eat are potatoes (organic, from our garden from last year), with a bit of green onions, frozen tomatoes and frozen beets. I eat my potatoes only with unrefined sea salt, either baked or grated and cooked into hashbrowns.

Are you saying that potatoes are void of nutrition?

Thanks,
Kate

Potatoes don't count towards five a day

Healthy Eating Made Easy

Hi Kate,

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry for any confusion - of course, potatoes are nutritious (and the way you serve them sounds delicious). But according to UK nutritional guidelines, which is what I have used as basis for the information on my website, potatoes don't count for the purposes of adding up the 'five portions of fruit/veg a day' that we are recommended to eat. They come under the heading of 'carbohydrates' instead.

So, keep on enjoying your potatoes just as you are doing, and simply ensure that you have five portions of other root vegetables, leafy veg and fresh fruit every day.

Happy Healthy Eating!

Elizabeth
