Jan 29, 2007, Salt Awareness Week

29 January - 4 Feb 2007 is Salt Awareness Week in the UK. The main message, is to avoid foods with more than 1.25g salt per 100g - start checking labels, and you'll realise just how many foods that covers.

Jan 28, 2007, Easy Valentine Day Recipes - Start Planning!

About this time of year I start leafing through my files of recipes, hunting for something special - but also easy and, of course, healthy - too cook in 2 weeks time, on Valentine's Day. Sweet Ginger Prawns...or Stir-Fried Beef...hmm...planning is all part of the fun.

Jan 27, 2007, Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables

I had a query from a site visitor today, who has stomach pain whenever she eats bananas. Banana allergy is uncommon, but it does seem to exist, although sometimes people who react to raw bananas can eat them in banana bread or cake, or in a smoothie. If you have a problem with a particular fruit, explore the other seasonal options, and exclude the problem fruit from your diet for a while. See if that helps. If it does, try reintroducing the doubtful item into your diet very gradually.

Jan 22, 2007, Healthy Cake Recipes - make them in bulk

I really should take my own advice more often... Yesterday was cold and windy, a day for comfort-cooking. I dug out a couple of cake pans and made not one, but TWO cakes, using organic butter and sugar, and wholewheat flour. One will be used for desserts and lunch boxes over the next few days, the other is sliced, wrapped and frozen...and what a lovely feeling that is. And it really, really took no more time to prepare, than if I'd been making one...

Jan 18, 2007, Jerusalem Artichoke Soup

What a treat, to see a box full of earth-covered, knobbly Jerusalem artichokes in the market yesterday. It's perfect soup weather - lashing rain and blowing a gale - and it took very little time to put together a bowl of this very seasonal soup.

Jan 12, 2007, Understanding a food label

This makes me really cross! Teenage daughter is eating a low-fat yogurt for breakfast. Good choice, or so you'd think. But not so fast...what's that on the label? "This pot provides 21.3g of sugars"...! 21.3g? That means virtually a quarter of that yogurt is sugar. 10g of sugar per 100g of product would be 'high sugar', never mind 21.3g. Yet 'low fat, fabulously fruity' sounds like a healthy option, does it not? Take nothing for granted - those manufacturers really don't care if we, or our children, get diabetes or galloping tooth rot.

Jan 9, 2007, Eat Garlic - the perfect post-festivities super food

Are you enjoying a lighter diet in these early weeks of the year, to make up for the excesses of late December? Remember to use plenty of garlic - one of the superfoods. Garlic can help protect you against heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels - excellent news if you've been over-indulging in high-fat goodies like cream, cheese and chocolate recently. Add garlic to salad dressings, pasta sauces or rub a fresh clove on a slice of toasted bread and add to a bowl of soup.

Jan 6, 2007, Healthy Breakfasts - start the day right!

My innards are still recovering from the festive onslaught, and all I want to eat is light, fresh food. If your favourite breakfast cereal has lost its appeal, try a fruit-based breakfast. A simple plate of sliced apples, clementine segments and a scattering of white grapes is a lovely, healthy start to the day.

Jan 5, 2007, Lunch Boxes for Kids

Oh no - the alarm clock went off this morning, and the kids had to be dragged out of bed and sent off to school. So we're back to the old question of what interesting and healthy things can go in the lunch boxes. What they like best at the moment is a serving of pasta, from the night before. I just have to remember to cook extra, and then there's no need to make sandwiches.

Jan 4, 2007, Eating Healthy to Lose Weight

Ooph! The holiday's over, the kids are back at school today - and my waistband is feeling distinctly tight. There's been too much temptation over the last two weeks, and now it's time to get back to a proper healthy eating routine, and adapt it, in order to lose that excess weight.
