What's the best New Year's resolution you can make to give yourself a great, healthy new diet in 2010?
According to new research released this week from the University of Hertfordshire, New Year's resolutions are doomed to failure - unless you follow five strategies to make them more achievable. Here's how to use these strategies to succeed with your healthy eating resolution.
Strategy 1: Plan a series of small goals. To do this, resolve to change your eating habits one at a time. Switch to fresh fruit for your morning snack. When you've established that habit, drop your lunchtime soda and drink water instead. Once you're used to that, add two extra servings of veggies to your evening meal...and so on. Follow healthy eating guidelines to introduce new habits into your diet.
Strategy 2: Reward yourself when you achieve each goal. But don't use food as a reward - it sets up the wrong messages in your head.
Strategy 3: Tell friends and family about your goals. Get their help and support, and tell them when you've achieved a goal. You might even persuade them to eat more healthily as well!
Strategy 4: Focus on the benefits of success. Eating more healthily has so many benefits, and can give you far better longterm health, helping you avoid many common diseases like heart disease, some cancers, diabetes and many others.
Strategy 5: Keep a record of your progress. Start now. Note your weight and your measurements. Notice how much energy you have - eating healthily can boost energy and make you feel much better. By charting your progress, you'll remind yourself of what you've achieved and how much better you look and feel when you eat healthily.
