What’s new at Healthy Eating Made Easy
Autumn - season of mists, mellow fruitfulness - and the new school term! This month I'm focussing on lunch boxes - how to make them healthier, and much more interesting. Click the links to view these new pages.

What do your kids like to eat?
Now I'd like your help. I've been doing a lot of thinking about how to encourage my kids to eat more healthy stuff, and have been making a real effort to involve them in decisions about meals, and get them interested in what they eat.
The results have been interesting, and sometime surprising, and you can read about them on this new page Kids Eating Healthy. I'll be adding to this page regularly, as my family campaign to eat healthily and enjoy it continues.
But now, I'd love to know what you do to get your kids to eat well. What healthy foods do they like, and how do you make sure they get enough? Any tips, tricks or ideas would be very welcome, and the best will go up there on the website, so that other people can benefit from your inspiration. Please get in touch - it'll be great to hear from you!
What's in season in September?
Autumn is a fantastic time for fresh produce. Why not make a decision to buy one fresh seasonal item every time you shop.
- Aubergine - use in bakes, moussaka, or with courgettes in ratatouille
- Beetroot - boiled or baked and served as an accompaniment, chopped into salads, or use in soups
- Blackberries - pick your own from the hedgerows. Best with other fruit like apples, in pies and crumbles
- Butternut squash - baked slices are lovely and sweet
- Courgettes - baked and stuffed, or in ratatouille
- Crab - these won't be around for much longer, so enjoy crab salads and sandwiches now
- Damsons - should appear any day now. Stew with sugar to taste
- Guinea fowl - cook as you would a chicken and enjoy the slightly stronger flavour
- Lamb - roast, or start using it in stews as the weather cools down
- Leeks - slender young leeks are in the shops now. Steam them whole, wrap in ham and bake under a cheese sauce. Shred and steam or saute them as an accompaniment, or use in soups
- Mackerel - simply grill or bake. Watch out for bones!
- Peaches - make the most of them before they disapper
- Pears - ripen in fruit bowl
- Plums - many different varieties for eating raw and cooking
- Potatoes (main crop) - great for mashing or baking
- Radishes - the long oval ones are less fiery than the round red ones
- Scallops - cook very lightly and serve with a squeeze of lime juice
- Sweetcorn - boil or roast whole cobs, cut into thirds for lunch box snacks
- Venison - a low fat and very healthy choice, to serve roast or stewed
- Watercress - good in salads, sandwiches or soups
