Autumn goodness on Healthy Eating Made Easy

It's pumpkin time, and although the UK crop has been damaged by heavy rains earlier in the season, these golden beauties are still starting to appear in the shops. Fresh pumpkin is a really versatile ingredient, and you can use it to make pumpkin soups, cakes and pancakes. You'll find easy, healthy recipes for them all on Fresh Pumpkin Recipes.

There's still plenty of autumn abundance to be had, so make the most of autumn fruit and vegetables, from plums and apples, to celery, leeks and maincrop potatoes.

Spook time is coming up, but don't use Halloween as an excuse to gorge on unhealthy food. Cook up a few healthy Halloween goodies instead, and serve a Scary Supper - with Healthy Halloween Recipes.

Healthy Restaurant Eating

Follow these tips for a healthier eating out experience.
  • Have a glass of water before you leave home - it will make you feel fuller, and less likely to dive into dips, garlic bread or olives while you wait for your meal.
  • Choose lightly cooked foods - poached, steamed, broiled, baked, not fried. Chicken, game, fish and seafood are low fat choices.
  • Go for tomato-based sauces rather than creamy recipes, and steer clear of anything with a melted cheese topping.
  • Soup's a nice filling starter, but again choose the broth-style or consomme soups, rather than creamy recipes and chowders.
  • Ask for dressings, gravy and sauces to be served separately so that you can decide how much to add.
  • Have vegetables served without a slathering of butter or oil, and your salads served sans dressing. You can save lots of fat-laden calories that way.
  • If you're tempted by a rich starter or dessert, share a portion with your companion. That way you enjoy the treat, but in a smaller quantity.
  • Boiled or baked potatoes are a healthier choice than chips and french fries.
  • Want the healthiest possible dessert? Fresh fruit salad or sorbet are the ones to select.
  • There is no law that says you must finish all the food on your plate if you're served with a massive helping. Try asking for a smaller portion, and have your plate removed as soon as you've eaten enough.
  • Avoid alcohol, or have just a glass of wine, rather than sharing a bottle. Always ask for water to be served as well - and remember to drink it!
  • When you eat out, enjoy the whole experience. Eat slowly and savour the delicious foods, but focus your more thoughts on the conversation and ambience. Bon appetit!
