Healthy Eating Hints
Healthy eating is all about tweaking your diet - add a little here, take away a little there, and your diet quickly becomes that much healthier. Try these simple tips:
- Watch your portions Keep servings of protein (meat, poultry) to the size of a deck of cards, keep your carbs (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, grains) to the size of your closed fist. Fill half your plate with vegetables or salad.
- Take care of your heart Two or more servings of whole grain a week can help cut your risk of heart failure. Aim for around three 15g (0.5 oz) servings each day. Make it a habit to have a bowl of porridge or a slice of wholegrain toast for breakfast.
- Cut down on salt Avoid any product with more than 1.25g of salt per 100g. Ready-made foods are often high in salt, even if they're sweet. Re-educate your tastebuds by never adding salt to food on your plate or to your cooking.
- Drink tea Antioxidants in tea are thought to strengthen bones as well as protecting against heart disease and some cancers. Cut down on fizzy drinks, and enjoy black or green tea instead.

Greek Prawns
Tangy Greek feta cheese gives this simple supper dish a lift. Serve with a green salad.
Finely chop two onions and soften in olive oil over a gentle heat. Crush two cloves of garlic and add to the onion, and cook for 1 minute. Add 2 cans of good quality chopped tomatoes. If the juice looks thin, add tomato puree to thicken. Add two generous pinches of dried thyme. Throw in 350g (12 oz) cooked peeled prawns (shrimp), thawed if frozen. Stir gently until heated throuth. Serve on a bed of rice and top with 100g (4oz) crumbled feta cheese and a scattering of chopped parsley.
