3 Quick Ways To A Healthier New Year

It's tempting - and easy - to kick off January with a vow to 'be healthier' in the New Year. But how easy is it to stick to that resolution?

The good news is that the path to a healthier lifestyle is made up of a myriad of tiny steps. Over the coming weeks, I'll be sending you regular quick tips that you can use straight away - and keep on using - to get you into healthier, happier habits in 2010.

Today's 3 tips for a healthier January are:

1. Make cherry tomatoes your snack of the day. Sweet and juicy, it's like popping a delicious little fruit into your mouth. Buy the best quality you can find - the vine-grown tomatoes generally have a better flavour. Tomatoes are an excellent healthy food, and men particularly should eat them every day, as they can help to protect against prostate cancer.

2. Give your liver a rest and cut your calorie-intake, all in one swoop, by hiding away your alcohol supplies. This one's for you if you reach for a glass of wine when you start to cook. Putting your wine away where you can't instantly reach it, can give your willpower that little boost it needs. What to drink instead? I'm enjoying tomato juice with ice, a squeeze of lemon and a dash of Worcester sauce.

3. Get active - and yes, this will be one of my 'healthy-you' tips every time. Tackling your diet is great, but to become seriously healthier you need to increase exercise as well. So, add a little exercise-extra to your day, like this:
- As you wait for the kettle to boil, grab a couple of cans of beans, hold one in each hand, arms straight by your sides and then raise and lower your arms from the elbow. Voila - the bicep curl! Do a couple of sets of 12.
